Called to the Court

Xavier Bwanya was known for making moves—on the basketball court, and, as he’ll admit, in trouble. As a young man growing up in Zimbabwe, Xavier had talent, but little direction. “Basketball gave me something to do,” he says, “but it didn’t give me peace.” That would come later—through a relationship with Jesus Christ that would completely change his life.

Xavier went on to play professionally and coach the sport he loved, but for him, basketball wasn't everything. It was a platform to worship Christ, and share the Gospel with others.

In Zimbabwe, resources are especially scarce for those living with disabilities. Many face a future without opportunities or community. Seeing this need, Xavier helped launch a wheelchair basketball program that offers not only a place to play, but a place to belong. “The court has become more than just a place for competition,” Xavier shares. “It’s a place where we open the Bible and talk about Jesus. It’s a place where people find hope.”

The program now includes a regular Bible study, and thanks to support from local churches, participants are being connected with jobs that fit their abilities. The impact is already growing beyond the original community—this model of sports and spiritual encouragement is spreading to other parts of the country.

Xavier’s story is one of transformation, and his ministry is now helping others experience their own. Through basketball, he’s creating spaces where lives are being changed—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Please join us in praying for Xavier Bwanya, his basketball outreach, and the expansion of this powerful ministry across Zimbabwe.
